Although tomatoes are commonly associated with vegetables, they are botanically classified as fruits! In botanical terms, a fruit is the mature ovary of a flowering plant, usually containing seeds. Tomatoes fit this definition because they develop from the ovary of a tomato flower and contain seeds.
This classification caused a bit of a culinary and legal debate in the United States. In 1893, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in the case of Nix v. Hedden that tomatoes should be considered vegetables for tariff purposes, as they were commonly used in savory dishes. This ruling was made despite the botanical classification of tomatoes as fruits.
So, whether you consider tomatoes fruits or vegetables, they are undeniably a versatile and delicious ingredient enjoyed in a wide range of savory and culinary dishes around the world.
