The practice of garnishing a martini with an olive has an interesting historical origin. Legend has it that the tradition began in the late 1800s when a bartender in San Francisco, California, named Professor Jerry Thomas, dropped a pickled olive into a cocktail. This cocktail was reportedly a variation of the Martinez, which is considered an early precursor to the modern martini.
The story goes that a gold miner who had struck it rich wanted to celebrate his good fortune and ordered a special drink at the Occidental Hotel, where Professor Thomas worked. The bartender used an olive as a garnish, and the customer enjoyed it so much that the practice of garnishing martinis with olives became a popular trend.
