Despite their name, strawberries aren't true berries. In botanical terms, a berry is a fruit produced from the ovary of a single flower with seeds embedded in the flesh. However, strawberries are what botanists call "aggregate fruits." each "seed" on the outside of a strawberry is actually an individual ovary containing a seed, and the fleshy part that we eat is derived from the receptacle of the flower. So, in a way, the real fruit is the tiny seed-like structures on the surface, while the juicy part that we love is not technically a berry!
